The macaw that is blue and gold is a stunning bird. Its stunning beauty is well-known. Its social nature makes it an excellent companion for families. It also excels in interaction and can pick up words and tricks very quickly.
Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello, water, apple and more. They are able to live for more than 50 years.
Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. If not properly socialized macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They should spend at least two to three hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also love going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet they are also great companions for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who may be frightened by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining sex. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's crucial that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help to correct any issues with behavior.
Lolita's Care
For years activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
A healthy diet is important for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A golden and blue macaw is a charming companion, but also clever. They are renowned for their ability to master new tricks and words quickly. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey to an avian companionship.
Additionally the bird needs a lot of interaction and bonds with her human family members effortlessly. Macaws of gold and blue are known to have loud vocalizations including "flock call" as a part of their natural behavior. They may also squabble or chew on their food at times, especially when they are angry or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to be aware that this type of behavior is normal and must be expected.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health and status but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid daily.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticised for the quality of the food they feed killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is threatened and is in a tank that many consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is undeniable However, her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her released into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has deteriorated.
Since her captor does not have to disclose this information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an important factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale that passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
